Distance Learning Postgraduate Degrees
The Department of Criminology offers distance learning degrees in the following key areas:
Criminal Justice The M.S.c course aims to develop and refine students` detailed knowledge and understanding of explanations of crime and the justice system. In addition the programme provides a wide-raging examination of the extent effects and explanations of crime, examines the criminal justice process including the police, courts and prison and analyses methods of crime prevention and control. It also offers the student the opportunity to undertake supervised research in the direct area of professional relevance. This course is accredited by the UK Law Society and the UK Bar council and has been designed to complement the formation of students and professionals alike e.g. Lawyers, Judges, Police, Armed forces and Prison Management officials.
Community safety This M.Sc course is to provide professionals with detailed knowledge and understanding of the key social theories and debates surrounding community safety. Topics such as racism, criminal behaviour and victimization are analyzed an assessed, and the applications of social, political and criminological theories are examined in depth. The degree also introduces research skills to evaluate the effectiveness of community safety initiatives. This course has been developed in response to needs by Lawyers, Armed forces, Police, Community leaders, Social leaders and City officials.
Police Leadership and Management In an era when policing worldwide is increasingly becoming the responsibility of local and city police forces who employ private companies and civilian specialists, traditional law enforcement agencies face increased responsibilities for managing staff and resources, devising and implementing plans, accounting for budgets, and a host of other duties. These tasks require skill and knowledge that have not been traditional components of police and military training programs. Equally most other management courses focus on issues relevant to the private sector and do not take into account the public service dimensions that are central to policing. This course bridges the gap between principles and requirements of policing as a public service and the techniques, principles and ethics of contemporary management. This course is offered as an M.Sc level course.
Security and Risk Management This innovative area of study is offered to students and professionals, from the public and private sectors, to develop detailed knowledge of different aspects of crime, risk and managing security in organizations. An understanding will be developed in a range of theoretical models that explain why and how people commit crime, how to analyze and assess security risk and how to manage these issues. As part of the courses students will also learn how to design, conduct and critically appraise effective research within these areas. The courses offered are designed to allow students and professionals, from all escorts, to provide practical and theoretical benefits that can be applied to a wide range of professional careers. This subject area can be studied at two different levels:
- M.Sc in Security and Risk Management
- Foundation Degree in Security and Risk Management |
